NCAA Basketball: Kansas dominance, overrated FSU, and more weekly takeaways

2) West Virginia’s limited ceiling
Just a week and a half ago, West Virginia was a top 10 team that looked capable of at least challenging Kansas and Baylor in the Big 12 title race. After playing both this week – and being blown out by both – it’s clear the Mountaineers simply don’t have the offense needed to compete at that level.
WVU is often criticized for their ugly style of play and, this year, that has stemmed from their offense. While Derek Culver and Oscar Tshiebwe are really good inside, they lack quality perimeter play.
The Mountaineers rank 290th nationally in effective field goal percentage, 305th in turnover percentage, and 311th in three-point shooting. To sum it up, they can’t shoot and turn the ball over at a high rate – neither of which are good things.
Freshman guard Miles McBride has proven to be an X-factor for them and can give them that backcourt production they need, but he has been held to 10 points or less in six of WVU’s last seven games.
All that has kept Bob Huggins’ squad from scoring 60 points in any of the past three games, making their offensive struggles even more obvious. It will limit West Virginia’s ability to make a long run through the NCAA Tournament. Right now, winning one game in the Big Dance might be as much as they can do.
