College team: Maryland Terrapins, 2017-18

NCAA Tournament finish: N/A

The Atlanta Hawks young core may be spotlighted by NBA All-Star Trae Young, but former Maryland Terrapins Kevin Huerter and Bruno Fernando help round out the rotation.

Huerter, the No. 19 pick in the 2018 NBA draft, has started the majority of games through one and a half seasons as a Hawk, averaging over 10 points on roughly 38% shooting from deep, according to Basketball-Reference. The sharpshooter earned a spot on the league’s All-Rookie second team after his first season.

Fernando was selected with the No. 34 overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, who quickly shipped him to Atlanta. The big man’s minutes have been limited, but he’s logged a handful of starts and contributed roughly 4 points per game as a rookie.

In College Park, Huerter and Fernando overlapped for just one season in 2017-18, when Huerter was a sophomore and Fernando was a freshman. Huerter broke out that year, scoring 14.8 points per game and shooting 41.7% from three to go with five rebounds and 3.4 assists.

Fernando also filled a starting role that season, adding 10.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while shooting 57.8% from the field. He improved on all those numbers the following season when he led the Big Ten in field goal percentage and took Maryland to the NCAA Tournament.

But while Huerter and Fernando were teammates in 2017-18, the Terrapins went just 19-13 and finished with a losing conference record that was good for eighth place in the Big Ten. They missed out on both the NCAA Tournament and the National Invitational Tournament.
