NCAA Basketball: Current 2019-20 NBA teammates who played in college together
The New York Wildcats
Duo: Kadeem Allen and Allonzo Trier
NBA team: New York Knicks
College team: Arizona Wildcats, 2015-16, 2016-17
Best NCAA Tournament finish: Sweet 16, 2016-17
Former Arizona Wildcat guards Kadeem Allen and Allonzo Trier teamed up in New York when the Knicks signed them separately during the 2018 off-season.
Allen, selected No. 53 overall in the 2017 NBA draft, spent his first season on a two-way contract with the Boston Celtics. Trier went undrafted in 2018.
Since joining the Knicks, Allen and Trier have put up similar numbers. According to Basketball-Reference, Allen is averaging just over 8 points and three assists in roughly 18 minutes per game, while Trier is logging slightly below 10 points and two assists in about 20 minutes.
The Knicks only won 17 games in 2018-19 and are looking at another losing record this season. But the first time Allen and Trier shared a backcourt, they had more success.
The two played together at Arizona during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. Those were Allen’s final two seasons with the Wildcats and Trier’s first two.
In 2015-16, Allen averaged 8.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists per game, compared with Trier’s 14.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists. In 2016-17, Allen tallied 9.8 points, four rebounds and three assists per night, while Trier logged 17.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists.
Trier’s numbers jumped again the following year when, during his third and final season in college, he led the Pac-12 in true shooting percentage, according to Sports Reference.
Allen and Trier’s shared Arizona teams enjoyed dominant stretches in the regular season. In 2016-17, they finished 16-2 in conference and won the Pac-12 Tournament thanks to four crucial free throws from Trier, who was named the tournament’s most outstanding player.
The Wildcats earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament that year, but they were upset in the Sweet 16 by No. 11 seed Xavier despite a 19-point, nine-rebound effort from Trier.
Allen and Trier took home some accolades in their two seasons together, too. In 2016-17, both were named to the All-Pac-12 second team, and Allen made the conference’s All-Defense team. Trier also made the Pac-12’s All-Freshman team in 2015-16 and the All-Pac-12 first team in 2017-18.
