Let the Kids Play

There is absolutely no way around the fact that the New Mexico basketball program has been an absolute mess since the middle of December. There have been run-ins with the law, injuries, discipline issues, and a shooting at a party just in the last three months. It took until a couple of weeks ago for Paul Weir to finally decided he needed to do something to right the ship. The step he took was to discipline multiple players while sacrificing a game against Boise State. The discipline carried on after that, but now really isn’t the time for Weir to try finally putting his foot down.

Now, Weir needs to make sure that he has his best players out there at all times and that those players aren’t worried about heading to the bench if their emotions get the best of them or the second they take a shot the coaches don’t agree with.

The ship has sailed on disciplining this team. The season is almost over. Right now, the only thing that matters is keeping the season alive for as long as possible.

Weir needs to let his guys know that he’s behind them no matter what in this game and he needs to get them fired up to play against San Jose State. We’ve already seen that a Lobo team in shambles can be beaten by this SJSU team. Paul Weir needs to bring this team together and get them to play with the fire and the chemistry that has been missing since JJ Caldwell and Carlton Bragg were suspended. If he can get that out of his team then they should win this game convincingly and might even be able to upset Utah State for the second time this week in round 2.
