Don’t get Cocky, Kid

It’s the famous advice Han Solo gives Luke Skywalker after he shoots down a TIE Fighter as they escape the Death Star. “Don’t get cocky, kid” is exactly what Brian Dutcher needs to be telling his players before Thursday’s game.

Air Force beating Fresno State on Wednesday should be good news for San Diego State. Fresno State played them tough both times the teams met up, but SDSU dominated Air Force on their home court the first time the two teams met. Now, they just need to make sure they don’t let drawing the weaker team become a curse.

It would be easy for the Aztecs to look past Air Force. The Falcons had a pretty bad second half of their conference schedule, going 2-6 in the month of February. Even in their win over Fresno State, they certainly showed some areas that SDSU can take advantage of.

When you have as much success as SDSU, it’s easy to look past a game like this and start thinking about revenge against UNLV, the host of this tournament, in the next round. The fact that the teams who could potentially threaten their one seed continue to lose also won’t help them maintain their focus.

We all know what the outcome of this game should be. San Diego State hasn’t gotten to 28-1 by accident. To make that 29-1, they have to keep themselves focused on the challenge in front of them and play to the best of their abilities.
