Villanova Basketball: 2019-20 takeaways from major win over Seton Hall
They need to double team
One area of concern that became abundantly clear early, but is of no surprise, Villanova had difficulty guarding Myles Powell. At the half time break, the Pirates held a sixteen to eight advantage with concerns to points scored in the paint. Those points in the paint were highlighted by Quincy McKnight (16 points) and Romaro Gill (6 points) each getting three easy lay-ups apiece, the latter after receiving the ball from Myles Powell.
Jay Wright opted to avoid the point guard versus point guard match-up and place Sophmore Saddiq Bey on Powell. Despite his athleticism, the 6 foot 8 Bey had difficulty staying in front of the quicker Powell. Fortunately for Bey and his teammates, Seton Hall utilized the screen’n’roll with Gill setting the high screen for Powell. This allowed Jeremiah Robinson-Earl to completely forget the offensively challenged Gill and focus on Powell until Bey recovered.
the adjustment made by Kevin Willard coming out of half-time of not letting Gill get off the bench resulted in Powell getting to the rim for, albeit contested, but a hand full of shots in the paint none-the-less. Unfortunately for Powell and the Pirates, he missed all five.
