Mid-major Basketball power rankings: Dayton, Gonzaga and ETSU rises up
14. Wright State Raiders (25-6, 15-3 Horizon League)
It was pretty clear early on that Wright State was going to be favored to win the Horizon League regular-season title, starting off league play with five straight dominant wins. The No. 6 scoring offense (81.6 ppg) has been a problem for most of their opponents this season but the defense at times has let the Raiders down.
Even after getting blown out by Youngstown State, Wright State won their last two road games, including by two over Northern Kentucky to clinch the title at the end. They were led by Conference Player of the Year Loudon Love (16.3 ppg and 9.7 rpg), along with senior scorer Billy Wampler (15.7 ppg), who also had a case to be award the title of best player.
As good a season as the Raiders have had, they must win the conference tournament in order to make the NCAA Tournament. The schedule setup works well for them, granted them a bye to the semifinals, where they’ll take on Illinois-Chicago. The Flamers upset Wright State earlier in the season, so here’s a chance to get another win. If that happens, a likely third matchup with second-place Northern Kentucky will be the final pairing. A win by the Raiders and they’ll be around a 13 seed in the field of 68.
