Big Sky Basketball: 2020 conference tournament preview and predictions
Semifinals
No. 1 Eastern Washington vs. No. 4 Portland State
Both teams like to move the ball quickly. Eastern won both games earlier 71-69 and 89-81. The Eagles will need to contest the three-point shooting of Matt Hauser who hit five for seven in the latter of the two games. Davison went off for 26 and 30 points against the Vikings. EWU will have to take better care of the ball after committing 22 turnovers in their latest meeting.
Prediction: Eastern Washington 81, Portland State 77
No. 2 Northern Colorado vs. No. 3 Montana
Northern Colorado has had Montana’s number this season, defeating the Griz 74-66 and 71-64. In addition, Montana has not been playing its best basketball in the last two weeks. Junior guard Timmy Falls has only been averaging 4.5 ppg in Montana’s last six games. The Griz will need more contribution from him for the Grizzlies to continue their quest for three-straight NCAA appearances.
Prediction: Northern Colorado 67, Montana 62
Finals
No. 1 Eastern Washington vs. No. 2 Northern Colorado
Eastern defeated Northern Colorado 89-84 in overtime and 68-64 but expect this game to go right down to the wire. The Bears will try to take away the three-point shooters of the Eagles.
However, EWU will look for buckets in transition. Rebounding will be key for the Eagles and the Bears are relentless on the boards. If Eastern can protect the ball, expect them to eek out the win and the NCAA Tournament berth.
Prediction: Eastern Washington 76, Northern Colorado 74
