SEC Basketball: 2020 conference tournament preview and predictions
First-Round
No. 12 Ole Miss vs. No. 13 Georgia
For both teams, it will be challenging to make a run in the tournament. The winner faces No. 5 Florida. However, Georgia has potentially the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. So, it’s possible but hard to see either of these teams escaping past the second round.
Prediction: Georgia
No. 11 Arkansas vs. No. 14 Vanderbilt
The Razorbacks and Commodores met back on Jan. 15, where Arkansas won 75-55. Both teams have a long road ahead of them, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Both have playmakers and both have a great coaching staff that can make a run in March.
Prediction: Arkansas
Second Round
No. 8 Tennessee vs. No. 9 Alabama
For Alabama, its NCAA tournament hopes are pretty much gone. But with John Petty Jr. back in the lineup, the Crimson Tide has something to play for. They have something to prove. With how Alabama plays its game, the loss to Tennessee is one they wish they had back. They can play fast. Shoot the three-ball and can do the dirty work.
Prediction: Alabama
No. 5 Florida vs. No. 13 Georgia
This is as far as Georgia is getting. Despite having one of the best players on its roster, Florida will prove to be too much. Sophomore forward Keyontae Johnson, senior forward Kerry Blackshear, and freshman guard Scottie Lewis were all named to various All-SEC teams. Georgia’s Anthony Edwards will have to have the game of his life.
Prediction: Florida
No. 7 Texas A&M vs. No. 10 Missouri
Texas A&M has the skills to win games and should do so against Missouri. They’ve beaten top-25 teams and with Buzz Williams, this team can do damage if they play at their best.
Prediction: Texas A&M
No. 6 South Carolina vs. No.11 Arkansas
South Carolina comes into this matchup having the ability to beat teams to make a deep run in the tournament. But to earn a bid to the NCAA tournament, the Gamecocks face four must-win games.
