17. Two season-changers for UNC in one night. (Dec. 15th)

North Carolina was 6-3 heading into its upcoming home contest with Wofford but Cole Anthony was looking like the potential No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. The Tar Heels hadn’t exactly been living up to their Top 10 hype considering their trio of early losses but they could also boast wins over Notre Dame, Alabama, and Oregon.

Dec. 15th, though, marked a true turning point for the team. Not only was their star guard (Anthony) sidelined indefinitely due to an injury but the team also suffered its second home loss to Wofford in the past three years.

The Tar Heels were already on a two-game losing streak but this defeat at the hands of the Terriers showed a glimpse into what was to come. As the weeks moved on, North Carolina wound up posting its worst season in some time as it finished 14-19. This loss to Wofford coinciding with their first game without Cole Anthony is the look-back defining moment of a forgettable season in Chapel Hill.

18. The Weirdest Box Score of the Season. (Dec. 18th)

Saint Mary’s vs. Arizona State at Talking Stick Resort Arena was supposed to be a fun non-conference matchup between two potential NCAA Tournament teams. It wasn’t particularly fun, though, as the Gaels jumped out to an early lead and walked away with a ridiculous 40-point victory (96-56) that not many people saw coming. Jordan Ford led the way with 34 points for St. Mary’s but the box score is far more interesting if you look at ASU’s contributors.

Arizona State scored 56 points in this game. Alonzo Verge scored 43 of them. Yes, that’s right. The guy who had averaged just 9.6 points on 34.7% shooting through ASU’s first seven games (and was relegated to the bench after the first three) went off for 43 efficient points (18-for-29).….in a 40-point loss. Only two other Sun Devils scored in the entire game!

Verge would go on to post a strong season on a likely NCAA Tournament team as he averaged 14.6 points per game for the campaign but this box score is still incredibly weird.
