11. Markus Howard drops 51. (Nov. 29th)

Markus Howard entered this season as a top contender for the National Player of the Year award. Even after the transfer departures of the Hauser Brothers over the offseason, Marquette was still regarded as a fringe Top 25 team and Howard was a major reason for that as one of the most prolific scorers in the country. Through the first month of the season, the Golden Eagles were mostly looking the part as they secured wins over Purdue and Davidson while suffering a loss to Wisconsin.

While facing USC on a neutral court, Howard put together one of his best scoring performances of his entire career – and that is saying something. He only played 31 total minutes in the game because the Golden Eagles were destroying the Trojans but still managed to put up a ridiculous 51 points in that playing time. He shot 9-for-17 from three on the night and was flat-out electric. It is also important to mention that this performance came just one day after putting up 40 on Davidson.

12. Michigan completes a magical B4A run. (Nov. 29th)

I swear this is the last major moment from the non-conference events that took place over Thanksgiving Week. Michigan, in its first year under new head coach Juwan Howard, faced murky expectations as the team lost a lot of talent from a year ago. At the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament, though, the Wolverines went on a magical run that included victories over Iowa State, North Carolina, and Gonzaga.

It is also important to note that the win over UNC looked much better at the time than it does in hindsight and the 18-point margin of victory over Zaga shouldn’t be ignored either. This was a special trio of games for the Wolverines as they proved that they belonged as one of the better teams in the country. Michigan experienced its ups and downs this season en route to a 19-12 record but this was among the highs.

The dance shouldn’t be forgotten, either.
