March Madness: Results of simulated 2020 NCAA Tournament
By Brian Rauf
Final Four
Semifinal #1
(4) Oregon 73, (9) Providence 71
What a Final Four! The night gets started off with the less-hyped game, but it certainly turned out to be the better one. Providence’s defense does their thing, forcing Oregon into 22 turnovers, yet the Ducks get 15 points from Anthony Mathis and some key buckets late from Pritchard as they win a nail-biter.
Semifinal #2
(1) Kansas 81, (7) Michigan 55
Michigan’s March magic under first-year head coach Juwan Howard runs out against a Kansas team on the mission. In (virtual) reality, their defense simply could not longer make up for their lack of offense – Simpson and Isaiah Livers combining to shoot 3/24 from the floor didn’t help, either. Kansas got 14 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists from Devon Dotson and 15 points from Agbaji.
National Championship
(4) Oregon 73, (1) Kansas 70
A balanced, well-played, even game in just about every phase made this one to remember. Oregon led by eight at halftime, but Kansas came back and actually grabbed the lead with just a few minutes to play. But, as he has been known to do all season long, Pritchard hit a three with seconds left in a tie game (not quite a full Kris Jenkins, but close) to give the Ducks their second national title, their first since the inaugural NCAA Tournament in 1939. He finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists and was named Final Four Most Outstanding Player.
So there you have it – the NCAA Tournament that could’ve been. It’s unfortunate that we have to resort to the virtual world this year, but we are less than a year away from announcing the 2021 NCAA Tournament field. Let’s look forward to that!
