7. team. 483. . . . Hawkeyes

MVP – Luka Garza

Garza was very good coming into this year, but not many could have predicted he would be this good. He was a force from the very beginning and introduced himself to the country with a 44 point performance against Michigan. Unfortunately, Iowa sometimes struggled to play defense so they lost games even when Garza played great.

Cassius Winston was the odds on favorite to win the Big Ten POY, but after Garza got going there was no stopping him. What is even scary for the Big Ten is that he was just a junior this year and could return to do it again next year. If he returns and the Hawkeyes learn defense they could be the best team in the country next year.

Best Moment – Beating Maryland 67-49

Iowa had some big wins this year, but none seemed as big as their blowout win over Maryland. Sitting at 1-3 in the Big Ten when they entered this game the Hawkeyes were desperate to not fall any further back in the standings. Maryland came in as a top-15 team and the favorite in this game.

The Hawkeyes used the desperation and took control of the first half and blew away the Terrapins. Joe Weiskamp hit five triples on his way to a game-high 26 points. Garza would add 21 and the duo was just too much for Maryland. The Hawkeyes also did a great job in limiting Anthony Cowan Jr to just nine points and Jalen Smith was the only one in double-figures. It was a show of what could happen when Iowa buckled down and played defense.
