Mountain West Basketball: Final power rankings for 2019-20 season
By John Vaccaro
1. San Diego State (-)
San Diego State’s season certainly didn’t end the way they had hoped, but they still deserve to end this season as the top team in the Mountain West. They had just built up too much of a lead during the rest of the season to be knocked off of this perch because they lost in the conference tournament final.
San Diego State’s resume truly just lacks flaws in terms of this conference. They beat every single team in the conference at least once and did so pretty easily against most of those opponents.
They had plenty of strong wins in conference play, beating each of the 9 teams behind them on the road (they didn’t get the luxury of playing San Jose State on the road). They also tacked on eight other wins at home. Their lone loss came against the team I ranked 3rd in these power rankings.
I honestly just couldn’t find a reason to drop SDSU to 2nd. The sad thing is that we won’t get to see if the committee feels the way about where they should be placed in their estimation. I believe they deserved the conference’s first ever 1 seed in the NCAA tournament for their troubles. I also think this team is the best chance the Mountain West has ever had to see a team finish 1st in the national rankings at the end of the year.
This San Diego State deserves so much more than just the top spot in the final Mountain West power rankings, but unfortunately, this is all I can provide them with. I enjoyed watching their rbe placedgh the conference all season long and can’t see any reason why they shouldn’t finish in the same place they were the first time I put out these rankings.
