NCAA Basketball: Matchups we would’ve loved to see in 2020 NCAA Tournament
Virginia vs. BYU
Virginia was a very interesting team this year. I mean, after their stunning defeat at the hands of UMBC in the First Round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament, they were a very interesting team with lots of questions surrounding them last year as well. They, of course, went on to win the National Title. This year, despite losing most of their offensive weapons from last year’s squad, Virginia proved to be a very scary team yet again. That is why the Cavaliers were bound to give anybody in the NCAA Tournament field a heck of a game.
BYU was also a very interesting case this season. They managed to drop a few games early on, but, as soon as their star, Senior forward, Yoeli Childs, became consistently healthy, things really began to click for the Cougars. Back on February 22nd, in a game that most likely allowed them to punch their ticket to the 2020 NCAA Tournament, BYU, ranked 23rd at the time, knocked off the 2nd ranked Zags, 91-78, behind a very clutch 28 point performance from Yoeli Childs. It was nice to see BYU finally do it.
The game between these two would have been very exciting because of the fact that the NCAA basketball world was pretty skeptical of both prior to the season. They certainly answered all the questions and proved the doubters wrong because both finished the season as two of the hottest teams in NCAA basketball.
Now, this potential NCAA Tournament game would have most likely been a 4 seed vs. 5 seed Second Round game. The prize for the victor would have been a potential date with a 1 seed in the Sweet 16. Both were capable of pulling off an upset of that magnitude, and a match with each other would have been the perfect primer.
