Nebraska’s Jervay Green transferring, interested in Trey McGowens

Jervay Green is the third player to leave Nebraska this offseason. Green, who was recruited by Cornhuskers’ former coach Tim Miles, had an up-and-down season with the Huskers, which included being suspended for a week by current head coach Fred Hoiberg for a team rules violation. The 6-3 junior college transfer scored in double-figures in each of the last two games of the campaign, marking the third time that he reached double-digits in consecutive appearances, to give him 10 such performances for the year. Green averaged 8.2 points and 4.2 rebounds though he shot just 39.7% from the field and 28.4% from beyond the arc.

Green’s departure comes about a week after Dashon Burke Jr. and Cam Mack announced that they were no longer affiliated with the program. Burke, who was suspended for the Big Ten Tournament for missing curfew, released a statement on March 10 that he would not be playing for the Huskers anymore. He finished second on the team in scoring with 12.2 points on 40.1% shooting from the field and 30.4% from long-distance. This was the 6-4 junior guard’s first season in  Nebraska as he started his career at Robert Morris.

Mack has declared fro the NBA Draft on March 12, but he has said that he will maintain his eligibility throughout the process, thus leaving the door open for his return to college basketball. However, it is unlikely that the 6-2 sophomore point guard will return to Lincoln.  The Austin (TX) native served multiple suspensions for rules violations, which forced him to miss the final three games of the 2019-20 campaign. Mack averaged 12 points along with 6.4 assists and 4.5 rebounds in 28 games.

With those three impending departures, plus the fact that Haanif Cheatham and Matej Kavas being out of eligibility means that Nebraska is currently one under the scholarship limit at 12. The Cornhuskers do already have a verbal commitment from Western Illinois guard Kobe Webster. Webster is immediately eligible as a graduate transfer for the Huskers. He is coming off back-to-back solid campaigns though most of his numbers went down this past season from a year ago except for scoring (17.1) and assists (3.6).

Nebraska also reportedly offered a scholarship to former Pitt guard Trey McGowens on March 18. McGowens is coming off a  disappointing campaign with the Panthers as he averaged 11.5 points, 3.6 assists, 1.9 steals, as well as 3.5 rebounds along with 2.8 turnovers in 2019-20. The 6-4 guard also has heard from Wichita State, Ole Miss, Georgia, Arkansas, Illinois, TCU, DePaul, Xavier, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Seton Hall, Iowa State, USC and UConn per Corey Evans of Rivals.
