SEC Basketball: Final 2019-20 power rankings for end of the season
By Dakota Cox
1. Kentucky Wildcats
The Kentucky Wildcats were by far the best team in the SEC this season. They won the regular-season title, technically won the SEC tournament, and tied for the best overall record in the SEC.
Kentucky has a reputation for running the SEC by dominating each recruiting class, but that was not the case this past season. They had a great recruiting class, but the only freshman star on the team was Tyrese Maxey. The rest of the major contributors were sophomores or juniors.
What really set the Wildcats apart this year was the growth of Nick Richards. The dude went from a role player to a double-double superstar from his freshman to junior year. It took time for him to take over, but his veteran presence certainly had an impact this year.
I’m expecting most of Kentucky’s players to go to the NBA like always, but they got some help from returning stars last year. Who knows? Maybe the impact of losing March Madness will encourage players to come back. We are living in a weird time, and I’ve seen weirder things happen.
No one wanted the SEC basketball season to end early, but this is the world we live in. We won’t know which teams would have done well in the NCAA Tournament, but at least we can see which teams were the best in the games that were actually played.
