San Diego State Basketball: 2019-20 season review of the Aztecs
By John Vaccaro
Evaluating the season
Absolutely incredible. That’s really the only way to describe San Diego State’s season. They were the last unbeaten team in college basketball this year, they ran away with the Mountain West regular-season title, and were in a pretty strong position to earn the conference’s first-ever 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
As much as people tried to poke holes in SDSU’s resume, this season avoided many of the pitfalls we usually see drag down mid-majors. In their non-conference schedule, they were 3-0 against opponents who finished the year in the top 25. They also avoided too many bad losses in conference play that dragged down their ranking (the loss to UNLV didn’t help, but one loss isn’t a killer).
This San Diego State team was arguably the strongest we’ve ever seen in the Mountain West. They had the conference Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and most of their starting lineup was named to the all-conference teams. Malachi Flynn was also a 2nd team All-American.
This SDSU team was primed to make one of the best March runs we’ve ever seen out of a Mountain West team and the only real disappointing part of their season is that it was cut short before we got to see just how far they could go.
