6. BYU Cougars

Another team that was devastated by the sudden cancelation of March Madness, the Cougars were arguably the hottest team in the country coming into the tournament. Railing off nine wins in a row before losing to Saint Mary’s in the WCC conference tournament semifinals, BYU played themselves all the way from on the Bubble to the #5 seed in the midwest region according to our own Lukas Harkins.

Having senior playmaker Yoeli Childs healthy for that stretch was huge, but what really helped the Cougars was finally buying into first-year head coach Mark Pope’s analytics-based modern style offense. After four successful years at Utah Valley, the former BYU assistant brought his new-age offense back to Provo this year, and the program sure has benefited from it. The Cougars ranked #1 in the nation in 3-point %, shooting an insane 42% as a team from beyond the arc, and were also top 5 in both Offensive Rating and eFG%.

Pope is way ahead of the curve when it comes to coaching offense in NCAA Basketball, so while losing Childs along with their other top scorers, Jake Toolson and TJ Haws, is gonna suck, the BYU faithful can take comfort in knowing the program is in good hands.
