NCAA Basketball: 7 pivotal recruiting battles remaining in the 2020 class
Kerwin Walton
SG | 6-foot-5 | 195 lbs | No. 97 overall
Perimeter shooting is paramount to success in the modern age of basketball. That has been the major trend of the sport over the past several years as spacing has become more important with just about every year. That trend has turned shooting stars such as Kerwin Walton into highly-coveted recruiting targets and several top programs are eager to potentially land a commitment from this smooth-shooting wing.
While Kerwin Walton definitely brings more to the table than just his pure stroke from beyond the arc, that is his biggest strength on the court. With his 6-foot-5 frame and quick release, Walton is particularly deadly from three and can fill it up in a hurry. He is regarded as one of the best floor-spacers in the 2020 recruiting class and is still debating which collegiate jersey he will be donning next season.
At this moment, Walton’s recruitment is one of the cloudiest to follow in the country. Even though he recently cut his list to six schools, it is impossible to determine which could be the favorite at this moment. Georgetown, Vanderbilt, Minnesota, Creighton, North Carolina, and Arizona are the programs still vying for his potential commitment. While this is pure speculation, it does feel as though Arizona could use more backcourt/shooting help and Creighton represents an excellent stylistic fit (especially with Alexander leaving for the pros).
In addition to his 3-point shooting, Walton is a strong passer for his position while also being able to defend multiple positions on the other end of the floor. He should be a dynamic two-way threat at the collegiate level and should see an immediate role wherever he chooses to play. Perimeter shooting might be what allows him to crack a rotation as a freshman, but he could stick due to his high IQ and strong defensive instincts.
