NCAA Basketball: Pros/cons of five-star forward Greg Brown’s 5 schools
3. Auburn Tigers
The Auburn Tigers are the most interesting school on Brown’s list. Bruce Pearl has caught fire in recruiting in previous years, leading Auburn to one of its most successful stretches in school history.
Pros
With most of Auburn’s roster departing for the second season in a row, Brown will have nothing to worry about in terms of playing time. Isaac Okoro, the Tigers’ star freshman, is certainly gone to the NBA. Given the success of Chuma Okeke the season before, Brown would have a chance to be the third-consecutive breakout freshman for Auburn.
The Tigers’ roster is far from complete, but Pearl was able to turn his roster around from the Tigers’ 2019 Final Four berth successfully, so Auburn will at least be competitive. Brown would not only be the focal point on offense and defense, but he would certainly be playing in meaningful games in the SEC.
Cons
While the Tigers are losing several players from this season’s roster, they just gained the commitment of top-50 power forward J.T. Thor on Easter. Brown should start over Thor, but he might not want to have any sort of competition for playing time.
Although the sports world is on pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, sanctions against Auburn for NCAA violations could be announced as soon as this summer. If Auburn is hit with a postseason ban, Brown would essentially waste his first and only season of college basketball.
Auburn could very well be a desirable location for Brown, but the fact of the matter is, it is far too risky. Between competition for playing time and an impending punishment, the Auburn Tigers are too much of a wildcard for Brown.
