NCAA Basketball: 15 head coaches on early hot seat for 2020-21 season
By Joey Loose
10. Steve Prohm (Iowa State)
After five seasons, it’s more than fair to say that Prohm’s seat is starting to heat up in Ames. While he did lead the Cyclones to the Sweet Sixteen in 2016, the results ever since have not exactly been inspiring. While it’s unfair to say he’s wasting the momentum former coach Fred Hoiberg instilled in this program, it’s clear that the results could be much better for Prohm.
It’s been feast or feminine in each of Prohm’s first five seasons. He’s won at least 23 games in three of those seasons, all of which ending in the NCAA Tournament. However, he’s also turned in a 13-18 mark in 2018 and last year’s team won just 12 games. Basement finishes in a tough Big 12 will heat up Prohm’s seat, especially when the offense fails to perform like in those seasons.
Will next year be better? The potential for improvement rests in the new faces on the roster, but I think it’s too early to expect to see Iowa State make a big step forward. I’m not sure how patient Iowa State is willing to be, but things certainly aren’t looking great. Another 12-20 type of season would be devastating for Prohm, but he can earn some safety with another turnaround season.
