NCAA Basketball: 5 best available players in 2020 transfer portal
Darius Perry, Guard
Once surrendering his starting spot as the Cardinals turned towards a more half-court style approach to their offense, it became clear point guard Darius Perry and Louisville no longer appeared like a good match. Although he still managed to contribute effectively while coming off the bench and spoke positively on his former team’s behalf following his decision, Perry ultimately chose to seek out a new opportunity, entering the trade portal last month.
As a speedy ball handler who likes to get out and run while also possessing a solid three-point shot, Perry enters the portal as a solid “spark plug” type player capable of jumpstarting a team’s offense all on his own. Perry best illustrated this capability during Louisville’s January victory over Clemson, when he scored 19 points while playing just 26 minutes, hitting 5/6 three-pointers.
However, Perry averaged just 5.6 points and 2.5 assists per game this year due to his playstyle proving incompatible to head coach Chris Mack’s, eventually causing his playing time to decline as the season progressed.
But aside from his raw offensive skills, Perry also illustrated an ability to defend well while at Louisville. While he might not offer the stats to prove it yet, Perry’s lateral quickness allowed him to lock down superstar ACC guards quite frequently when given the chance this year.
Perry might not appear as a stud at first, but if given the right opportunity, he might blossom Into one come next year. Teams currently looking at Perry include Georgia, Marquette, Gonzaga, Seton Hall, San Diego State, and Arkansas according to 247Sports.
