Illinois Illini

There’s a lot going on this offseason for Illinois Basketball, including their top two players (Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn) testing the NBA Draft process. They also lost their top bench wing Alan Griffin, who elected to transfer to Syracuse. The team does have a ready replacement in Holy Cross transfer Jacob Grandison, a 6’6 wing who averaged 11.5 ppg in his two seasons before sitting out this past year.

Regardless of what happens this offseason, the 2021-22 roster for Illinois is going to look vastly different. Both Dosunmu and Cockburn are going to be gone, along with guard Trent Frazier. That leaves forward Giorgi Bezhanishvili and the incoming top-15 recruiting class as the key pieces, along with Grandison. But even his presence shouldn’t be too much of an issue for Brown if he chooses the Illini as he is capable of playing the shooting guard position as well. Although class of 2021 top-100 guard Luke Goode has already committed and his shooting ability may be best for the team at the two-guard spot.

There’s going to be a ton of turnover in the Big Ten overall and it could be up for grabs in 2022. Coach Underwood’s recruiting has been first-rate in the past couple of years and Illinois is on an upward projection. Brown would be a great rotational piece for the Illini but not a guaranteed starter if Grandison has a big upcoming year.
