Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

The Yellow Jackets will have one of the best backcourts in the ACC next season, led by Michael Devoe and Jose Alvarado. Devoe (16.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg and 3.4 apg) and Perez have similar games and Georgia Tech’s offense under Josh Pastner works well with guards. Considering that Alvarado is a rising senior and Devoe is a 2021 NBA Draft candidate, the team needs to have a quality guard waiting in the wings for the 2021-22 season.

Georgia Tech did lose frontcourt assets this offseason but should be a mid-tier ACC team next season and in a position to compete for an NCAA Tournament bid. If they don’t, it could be it for Coach Pastner, who definitely is on the hot seat. Likely future transfer rule changes won’t have Perez stuck, as he could go elsewhere in case of a firing. But is it worth sitting out for a full season for a head coach, just to go somewhere else when a move occurs?

Illinois Illini

Whether this season or the next, Illinois isn’t going to have Ayo Dosunmu around as the lead guard. And with Trent Frazier graduating, the team needs to find a new set of perimeter players. They already have a pair in top-60 incoming freshman guards, Adam Miller and Andre Curbelo. At this moment, Perez is the most reliable option of the three but there truly is room for everyone.

One thing about Perez that helps his case is that he can play the point, shooting guard and small-ball wing positions on the court, thanks to his elite rebounding and passing ability, along with his overall size. So Illinois absolutely could find a spot for him and he may replace either Miller or Curbelo in the lineup if either struggle as a freshman.
