NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing guard Jose Perez 10 transfer options
New Mexico Lobos
Whether it’s players dismissals, graduations and the four outgoing transfers this offseason, New Mexico will lose just about their entire rotation from this past season. And considering Makuach Maluach and Zane Martin will graduate after next year regardless, that creates a massive void on the perimeter.
At this point, there are no confirmed rotation-quality guards for the Lobos in the 2021-22 season, which is why the program has been after so many transfers. But with so much uncertainty and roster turmoil going on, there’s little reason for Perez to pick New Mexico, at least being the first and having to sit out a year. Of course, a number of teams on his list can be currently described as “dysfunctional”.
St. John’s Red Storm
As a New York native, St. John’s is the “hometown” option for Perez, which makes them an instant contender to land the grad transfer. And they’ll need him for sure since they lost Mustapha Heron this offseason and will lose leading scorer LJ Figueroa after next offseason, as well as leading passer Rasheem Dunn.
The Red Storm does have a trio of incoming guards, including top-tier JUCO commit Vince Cole, along with combo guards Dylan Wusu and Posh Alexander. These three will be rotation assets but the team will need a lead guard to make a run up the Big East ladder. Perez has shown the ability to be a dynamic player and what better team to do it for than the one he lived and players just mile away from?
There are some destinations that don’t provide a clear role for Perez at the moment, while others aren’t necessarily the most ideal situations for a transfer with plenty of options. Of the 10, I would argue that BYU, Illinois, Minnesota and St. John’s have the best chance to landing Jose Perez. Let’s see how this recruitment ends and who’ll get a quality sit-out transfer.
