Michigan State: Joey Hauser

Michigan State Basketball knows they will not have their leading scorer from this past season in Cassius Winston. However, the Spartans and coach Tom Izzo will have to wait to see if their second-leading scorer Xavier Tillman will return or not, currently, CBS.com insiders have Tillman going late in the first round. Regardless if Tillman is a Spartan or not, it will not affect Joey Hauser’s breakout season.

The absence of Tillman would result in more touches for 6’9 Hauser who sat out 2019-20 after transferring from Marquette. If Tillman does lace it up for the Spartans for one more season, Hauser’s 42 percent from the three-point line becomes an even greater asset as Tillman will demand a lot of attention in the paint.

Coming out of Steven Point High School Hauser was the 57th ranked freshman, in his one year with Marquette he was their third-leading scorer at just under ten points per game while finishing second on the team in rebounds at just over five per game. Hauser accumulated those stats with a 17.6 percent usage rate.

With Winston moving on and with Tillman and Joshua Langford still pondering their future, Hauser’s importance can only grow as he will be a better option to extend the defense than Rocket Watts or Gabe Brown. There is no reason to think Hauser will not replace Tillman’s 13 points per game that earned him a spot on the All-Big 10-second team.
