North Carolina’s 2020 Backcourt

North Carolina’s 2020 recruiting class is special as it is ranked at No. 2 in the nation and features a trio of five-star commits ready to make an impact right away. This quintet of newcomers also includes a pair of players that made big jumps over the past few months: Caleb Love and R.J. Davis. The two McDonald’s All-American guards have both steadily increased their stocks and look to form a dynamic duo for UNC when they take the court next season.

Caleb Love | PG | 6-foot-3 | 170 lbs | No. 12 overall

Starting with Caleb Love, the 6-foot-3 five-star has been progressively moving up recruiting rankings ever since he made the switch to the point guard position prior to last summer. That is when he really started to grow his all-around game as he has blossomed as a passer in addition to his already well-known scoring and defensive skills. Love brings plenty of size to the position and is ready to make an impact from Day 1.

North Carolina will be losing Cole Anthony to the NBA this offseason, but Love should be a suitable replacement in the rotation. His scoring will add a nice dimension to the backcourt and he can help facilitate for what will be one of the best frontcourts in America. Love’s biggest recent recruiting ranking jump occurred in the Top247, where he is slotted at No. 6 after a 17-spot jump for the final rankings.

R.J. Davis | SG | 5-foot-11 | 164 lbs | No. 47 overall

R.J. Davis, on the other hand, is someone that might still be undervalued by recruiting rankings. He is the lowest-rated McDonald’s All-American this year and is fresh off an excellent senior season with Archbishop Stepinac. Davis was named New York’s Mr. Basketball for his efforts and he will head to Chapel Hill as 5-foot-11 two-guard capable of filling it up from anywhere on the floor.

These kinds of undersized scorers are often undervalued but Davis is the type of player that just gets it done. He can function at either backcourt slot and should pair nicely with Love. Davis brings exceptional quickness to the court and can create for himself with ease as a result. His jump into the Top 50 of the class was definitely warranted, and you can make an argument for him to be even higher.
