NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Notable late risers in the 2020 class
Marcus Bagley – Arizona State
SF | 6-foot-7 | 220 lbs | No. 27 overall
Arizona State only secured two commits in the 2020 class but they are both special. Of course, landing five-star shooting guard Joshua Christopher was the biggest news of the offseason for the Sun Devils, but the growth of Marcus Bagley has also been encouraging. After a strong senior season leading Sheldon (CA) to a 28-5 record, Bagley is now ranked at No. 27 nationally by 247Sports Composite, putting him just on the fringe of being a five-star prospect in the class.
In terms of his playing style, you would be hard-pressed to find many scoring threats as dangerous as Bagley in this class. He brings excellent size to the wing at 6-foot-7 with a well-built frame and can fill it up in a variety of ways. This includes being an excellent perimeter shooting both off-the-dribble and in catch-and-shoot situations. He is an above-average ball-handler for his size as well, making him a dangerous driver.
There should be no doubt about the fact that Bagley will be able to score at the collegiate level. In fact, pairing him with Christopher might just give Arizona State the most deadly freshmen scoring duo in the country during this coming season. Bagley can play multiple positions on the floor and he is not afraid of taking advantage of a mismatch with his combination of size and quickness.
The big key for Bagley will be improving on the defensive end. He has all of the physical tools needed to be a solid defender at multiple positions but needs to add consistency in that area. Arizona State has ranked better in adjusted defensive efficiency than offensive in each of the past two seasons (although it was definitely the other way around before), so Bagley could learn quickly. Either way, he will be a big-time performer and is trending up after a healthy senior season.
