AAC Basketball: 2020-21 breakout candidates from each team
G Mika Adams-Woods, Cincinnati
A new era is approaching ahead of John Brennan’s second season with the Cincinnati Bearcats. Tre Scott and the Cumberland brothers aren’t walking through that door in 2020-21, and there’s a possibility Keith Williams won’t be either if he chooses to remain in the 2020 NBA Draft.
Almost by default, that leaves Mika Adams-Woods as the top breakout candidate for Cincinnati. The rising sophomore showed potential during his first collegiate season and there’s an outside chance he’ll be the team’s top returning scorer from the last campaign.
As a freshman, Adams-Woods averaged 5.0 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game, shooting 37.3 percent from three-point distance. The ball will be in his hands a lot next season, so expect all of those numbers to rise.
Adams-Woods will have to work on his consistency as a sophomore. There are games where the freshman was a non-factor, including a January victory over SMU where he played 22 minutes, but took just two shots and failed to score a single point. Games like that need to start coming few and far between.
Adams-Woods works hard on both ends of the court, though, and is capable of playing the hard-nosed defense Cincinnati is historically known for around these parts. A big sophomore season would elevate the ceiling of this program for the near future.
