AAC Basketball: 2020-21 breakout candidates from each team
C Morris Udeze, Wichita State
The first step in identifying a breakout candidate for Wichita State is a complete analysis of the roster, since nearly half of last year’s team decided to transfer this offseason, making the Shockers one of the most discussed programs in recent months. The dust is finally settling for Gregg Marshall’s squad, though.
Morris Udeze was almost one of those players who chose to transfer. He dabbled in the transfer market before ultimately deciding near the end of April to remain with the Shockers. On the court, he’s about to get an opportunity to justify that choice.
Jaime Echenique – the only 2019-20 player who departed by means other than a transfer (graduation) – was the lone center in front of Udeze on last year’s depth chart. Udeze averaged 4.3 points and 2.8 rebounds in just 10.5 minutes per game, consistently blocked in playing time.
While there are a couple of players who stand a bit taller than Udeze on next year’s roster, there are no true centers outside of Udeze. He should be able to earn a starting spot next season, especially with all of the roster turnover going on around him. Udeze drew interest from several major programs during his time in the transfer portal – he has a chance to prove why this season.
