AAC Basketball: 2020-21 breakout candidates from each team
F Ethan Chargois, Southern Methodist
The SMU Mustangs are in the extremely rare situation of returning their entire roster intact from a year ago, with no new additions to the team this offseason. Tim Jankovich’s team was a middling AAC squad in 2019-20, but that type of continuity should garner better results as long as their draft-eligible players return.
Some Mustangs fans may snicker at the idea of Ethan Chargois breaking out in his final collegiate season. That breakout may have already happened for the Tulsa native during his sophomore season when the forward averaged 12.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
His junior season was a big disappointment, though. He averaged 7.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, both collegiate lows for Chargois. He also shot just 25.3 percent from three-point range. Accordingly, his minutes were reduced throughout the season.
Nevertheless, Chargois ended the season on a hopeful note, playing his best game of the season in a 61-60 loss to USF. The forward scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds, the former serving as a season-high amidst a slow season. Expect Chargois to carry a chip on his shoulder for his final collegiate season, eager to prove that the gains he made as a sophomore can’t be undone by his junior setbacks.
