NCAA Basketball: 10 schools looking for new face of program for 2020-21
Dayton Flyers – Obi Toppin
The Dayton Flyers were undefeated in the Atlantic 10, were eyeing a potential No. 1 seed, and had the National Coach of the Year, Anthony Grant, and National Player of the Year Obi Toppin when the season was canceled. Instead, Toppin’s Dayton career is over as he is more than likely headed to the NBA, and Dayton is looking to see how they can springboard off of last season’s success.
Nowadays most everybody in sports uses the “next man up” mantra, and for Dayton that next man up to be the focus of both his own team and the Flyers’ opponents is the guy who was Toppin’s No. 1 sidekick in 2019-20, Jalen Crutcher. The senior guard will return to Dayton for his senior season as the team’s top scorer, having averaged 15 points per game, top assist man, handing out 4.9, and shooting nearly 47% from the field and over 42% from beyond the arc, where over half his field goal attempts come from.
In his senior season, and over 86% from the free-throw line. It should be Cutcher’s turn to see if he can help Dayton build off of what they had going last season, and to shine brightly in the Dayton Flyers’ spotlight.
