Virginia Tech Hokies

The roster for the Hokies has been going through constant turnover. Leading scorer Landers Nolley has gone to Memphis, while the team replaced him with another top scorer in Cartier Diarra from Kansas State. They also have Iowa forward Cordell Pemsl prepared to sit out for a season but now has to deal with the recent departure of PJ Horne, a 6’5 forward who averaged 7.6 ppg and 4.3 rpg as a starter.

Although Smith is just 6’7, he’d actually be one of the biggest players on Virginia Tech’s roster. They do have Wofford forward transfer Keve Aluma ready to go next year alongside three-star commit David N’Guessan. But Smith would be an ideal pickup to replace Horne and would provide needed experience for this young squad. Then the Hokies would have time to find a real replacement for the following season at the wing.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons

The coaching change from Danny Manning to Steve Forbes has caused a number of departures on the roster, including Olivier Sarr and Chaundee Brown both transferring out. Wake Forest did retain most of the rotational pieces, including power forward Ismael Massoud and already committed grad transfer Ian Dubose. Coach Forbes got his first pickup in UNLV grad transfer shooter Jonah Antonio this offseason as well.

There are still a number of roster spots available for some players to come in and have bigger roles than they would at other places. Smith could not only start with the Demon Deacons but be a focal point of the offense. The winning may not be there but in his final season, this could be a win-win scenario for both sides.

Justin Smith is one of the top available grad transfers right now in the portal and there may not be much better than him the rest of this offseason. Him being a “tweener” may play into which teams make a push for the forward but he’ll still have plenty of interest.
