ACC Basketball: Top 10 head coaches of the century (2000-20)
By Joey Loose
1. Mike Krzyzewski – Duke (2000-2020)
Krzyzewski had already been at Duke for twenty years by 2000, but the twenty since have been even more successful for the Hall of Famer. The all-time leader in head coaching wins has a perennial contender with the Blue Devils.
Duke marched to national titles in 2001, 2010, and 2015, adding a Final Four run back in 2004. Krzyzewski brings in some of the best young talent in the country and puts them in prime position for success both at college and in the pros. The team made every NCAA Tournament since the turn of the century and has finished lower than 3rd in the ACC only three times during that span. As long as Krzyzewski remains at Duke, you can pretty much pencil in Duke as a national title contender.
Clearly, he greatly elevated this Duke program and recent results are only evidence of that. The only concern comes from a lack of Final Fours in recent years, with some heartbreaking Elite Eight losses in the past two Tournaments. College basketball’s greatest head coach just keeps going, now entering year 41 in Durham. Surely we can expect even more success from the Blue Devils in the years to come.
We’ve taken a deep dive into the ten greatest ACC head coaches since the turn of the century. It’ll be interesting to watch how the list changes in the coming years and how new coaches make their mark on this incredible conference.
