8. Skip Prosser – Wake Forest (2001-2007)

For anyone reading this who is young or just getting into college basketball in recent years, you might be shocked to hear that Wake Forest also used to be a pretty great program. When Prosser took over in 2001, the Demon Deacons were already in pretty great shape. However, Prosser had a way of elevating this team to the next level in the years to come.

In his six seasons in Winston-Salem, Prosser led the Demon Deacons to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet Sixteen in 2004 with Chris Paul. His 2005 team rose as high as #1 in the nation but were upset by West Virginia in double overtime during the second round of the Tournament. The program was still in solid shape even after two struggling seasons, but Prosser passed away in 2007 from a heart attack, stunning the Wake Forest community.

Things just haven’t been the same since Prosser’s passing. Successor Dino Gaudio led the team to a pair of Tournament appearances, but the last decade has been a major struggle. The fast-tempo exciting offenses are long gone and the Demon Deacons are wallowing in the ACC basement. The recent hiring of Steve Forbes should bring new excitement to Winston-Salem, but excitement is useless until there are actual results. Wake Forest is a shell of its former self, long past the success that Prosser brought to the school.
