Hawkeye Guards

Jordan Bohannon is just the start of a really solid backcourt in Iowa City. 6-6 guard and blossoming pro prospect Joe Weiskamp is returning to school as a rising junior. Wieskamp is coming off of a Third Team All-Big Ten campaign where he averaged 14 points and six rebounds while shooting over 50% from the field. With a massive season, I think that Weiskamp has the ability to turn himself into a borderline first-rounder in the 2021 NBA Draft.

The aforementioned Joe Toussaint also adds to the Hawkeyes’ talent as the guard spot. CJ Frederick also returns to Iowa following a season where he averaged over 10 points a game and nearly three assists while earning All-Big Ten Freshman honors. If Frederick can build on his freshman season, he can develop into a star in this conference.

In addition to those four guys, Iowa adds a recruiting class including 3-star point guard Ahron Ulis (yes, he is the little brother of former Kentucky star Tyler) and 3-star shooting guard Tony Perkins. With that said, 3-star recruits normally aren’t asked to contribute too much right away for teams with the outlook of Iowa, and any contributions would be the cherry on top of a potentially great backcourt.

At the end of the day, none of this is a shot at Wisconsin’s backcourt. D’Mitrik Trice is coming off of a season where he raked in Third Team All-Big Ten honors entering his senior year. Brad Davison is coming off a good junior season in his own right as well, averaging 9.9 points per game. Davison is as tough as they come and has provided Badgers fans with some great memories, including a game-winning three against Maryland this past season.

In my mind, great and experienced guards lead to championships. When it is all said and done, I think that both Iowa and Wisconsin will be in the mix for the Big Ten title and ultimately high seeding in the NCAA Tournament. I do give the Hawkeyes the edge over the Badgers, though, as I think they are bound for a special season. Fran McCaffery seems to have a special group, and Hawkeyes fans should be excited for what is to come in 2020-2021.
