NCAA Basketball: 10 teams who should target transfer Justyn Mutts
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers
This may have been the quietest head coach Rick Stansbury has been in an offseason for the Hilltoppers. Although, they may have a major roster addition on the way if top-40 guard commit Zion Harmon reclassifies to the 2020 class. With him, leading scorer Taveion Hollingsworth and big man Charles Bassey all coming back, Western Kentucky looks to be a favorite to win Conference USA in 2020-21.
With a couple of scholarships available, there’s no reason why not to target a play with two years of immediate eligibility. Even returning from injury, Bassey won’t be 100% until December-January and there’s not much depth outside of both he and Williams. Mutts can provide a good 15-20 minutes as a backup and would end up as a starter for the year after once they depart.
Virginia Tech Hokies
With forward PJ Horne just recently transferring out, the Hokies frontcourt depth is as thin as it was for this past season. Tyrece Radford is coming back as the returning top rebounder (6.2 rpg) but is only 6’2 in terms of size and that won’t cut it in the ACC. They also have Wofford transfer Keve Aluma coming off a redshirt year but he and John Ojiako alone won’t cut it.
Going from Delaware in the CAA to Virginia Tech in the ACC is a major jump and one where the odds aren’t good Mutts will be an impactful rotational piece. But playing for a team in a top-tier conference may be too good to pass up and if he’s willing to play 10-15 mpg, this transfer could provide an immediate boost for VT and their quest to get bigger inside.
Justyn Mutts won’t be a transfer many casual fans will know about but any player with two years of immediate eligibility will have the intrigue of NCAA Basketball head coaches. Now looking for his third program, we’ll see if he makes a jump to a power conference or picks a high-profile “mid-major team.
