AAC Basketball: Top 15 impact players from 2020 recruiting class
8. AAC Basketball recruit rankings – Sion James (Tulane)
Tulane Basketball finished the 2019-20 season at 4-14 and in last place. With no players transferring or declaring early for the NBA Draft, Coach Ron Hunter knew he was losing back-up point guard Nic Thomas (7.9 PPG) and starting shooting guard Christian Thompson (14.1 PPG,6.3 RPG). With Southern Mississipi transfer Gabe Watson (13 PPG) only being eligible to start playing in 2021-22, Coach Hunter not only recruited shooting guard Jaden Coleman but Sion James as well.
Despite being ranked by 247sports more than 100 spots behind Jaden Coleman, the 6’4 James’ ability to play either position in the backcourt will allow him to get minutes as a backup point guard. While playing at Lanier High School James demonstrated that he is NCAA ready. While he did not play point guard at Lanier, James is aggressive and is a threat to score off the pass and cut.
He has a great court vision that enables him to make not just smart passes but spectacular passes to set teammates up for easy baskets. It is going to be difficult to keep James on the bench for significant time and it is only because of the presence of Jordan Walker and fellow recruit Jaden Coleman that Sion James is not higher on the impact list.
