NCAA Basketball: Updated early top-25 power rankings for 2020-21 season
NCAA Basketball power rankings – North Carolina Tar Heels
The biggest team disappointment from last season was undoubtedly the Tar Heels, who finished tied for last in the ACC and under .500 overall. Cole Anthony was good when healthy and Armando Bacot was solid as a freshman but with the clear exception of All-ACC breakout star Garrison Brooks, the rest of the supporting cast was a complete disaster.
The roster has undergone a complete turnover, with the No. 2 overall recruiting class coming in. There is a trio of five-star commits, led by point guard Caleb Love and big men, Walker Kessler and Day’Ron Sharpe. The others including wings Puff Johnson and Kerwin Walton, as well as top-50 combo guard RJ Davis.
There may not be a better overall frontcourt in the country next season than the Tar Heels, with both Brooks and Bacot returning, as well as the five-star freshmen backing them up. No matter what happens, North Carolina will always have two quality big men on the court at all times.
The question lies in the backcourt. Love will have a ton of pressure to succeed and will have to be an All-ACC talent in order for the Tar Heels to be a conference contender. Returning players Leaky Black, Anthony Harris and Andrew Platek will have to be solid role players and provide the experience and leadership towards the young cast. The shooting overall will also be a question that will have to be answered but the talent on the roster is there for this to be a top-10 team. They’ll just need one of those four-star guards to break through and be a starting-caliber shooting guard.
