NCAA Basketball: Updated early top-25 power rankings for 2020-21 season
13. NCAA Basketball power rankings – Creighton Bluejays
When the past season came to an end and “way-too-early rankings were being released, Creighton was consistently ranked in the top-5 overall. That has changed, with the decision by leading scorer and two-way star Ty-Shon Alexander electing to stay in the NBA Draft. It’s a big blow for the team, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Davion Mintz grad transferring over to Kentucky hurts the depth as well but this team still has plenty of perimeter quality on the roster.
All-Big East point guard Marcus Zegarowski will be a top candidate for Conference Player of the Year, while Mitchell Ballock and his 44% three-point shooting also returns. Four-star international guard commit Rati Andronikashvili helps provide depth as well as a future lead ball-handler. Fellow starters Damien Jefferson and Christian Bishop also are coming back, along with the comeback of big man Jacob Epperson after missing all of last season with an injury. He and four-star center Ryan Kalkbrenner gives Creighton a true frontcourt that they didn’t have this past season.
Creighton was one of the best scoring teams this past season and that should remain the case for 2020-21. The expected improved play of the frontcourt will also be a boost to provide the needed balance. However, it remains to be seen how devastating the absence of Alexander will be next season.
