NCAA Basketball: Updated early top-25 power rankings for 2020-21 season
NCAA Basketball power rankings – Kentucky Wildcats
Some teams lose some production and others lose a lot of production. Then there’s Kentucky, who lost just about 99% of scoring, rebounding and passing production of this past season. Everyone has either transferred or entered/stayed in the NBA Draft. The only returning rotation player is Keion Brooks Jr., who averaged 4.5 ppg and 3.4 rpg as a freshman.
Joining him is the No. 1 overall recruiting class, filled with six players ranked in the top-65 overall and a pair of five-star shooting guards in Terrence Clarke and BJ Boston. Both are ranked in the top-10 overall as individuals and either can go for 15-20 ppg as freshmen. Also in the class is top-30 ball-handler Devin Askew, along with forwards, Isaiah Jackson, Lance Ware and Cam’Ron Fletcher.
The one upperclassmen guaranteed to play next season Creighton grad transfer guard Davion Mintz, who’ll be another ball-handler the Wildcats can use. They also added Wake Forest center Olivier but he’ll need a waiver to play next season. He could be the missing piece at the five-spot, or Kentucky will hope that Jackson is capable of playing big minutes as freshmen.
As usual, this is going to be a very young team that’ll have 1-2 first-round NBA Draft picks. The ceiling is high for this team but the floor can be low, considering how reliant they’ll be on freshmen contributors all throughout the rotation. Kentucky also had the No. 2 overall recruiting class a year ago but only Tyrese Maxey excelled on the roster. They’ll need the 2020 group to collectively do well in order to win the SEC.
