NCAA Basketball power rankings – Baylor Bears

There are still a pair of big decisions left this offseason from the two leading scorers of Baylor Basketball. Guards MaCio Teague and Jared Butler could be leaving for the pros but if they stay, they’ll be in a dogfight with both Kansas and Texas Tech for the Big 12 crown.

The biggest confirmed departure is forward Freddie Gillespie, an All-Conference performer who led the team with 9.0 rpg. The good news is that forward Mark Vital and Tristan Clark will be back for their senior seasons, backed up by UNLV transfer Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua and four-star top-100 center Dain Dainja. There may be concerns about the collective offensive production but this should be a solid defensive and rebounding unit.

Outside of Teague and Butler, Baylor has plenty of guard depth as well. Auburn transfer Davion Mitchell is the point guard who also scores in double figures, while Presbyterian transfer Adam Flager is coming off a redshirt season. Four-star point guard LJ Cryer will have to wait a year before becoming an impact player for the Bears but at least he can be insurance in case any of the starters get hurt.

This is a team that has good depth overall and should remain as one of the best defensive units in all of basketball. As long as the frontcourt can hold up their end of the scoring load, this will be a team nearly as good as they were this past season.
