USC Basketball 2020 recruit – Evan Mobley: 6’11 / 205

The five-star recruit from Rancho Christian High School is ranked as the third-highest recruit nationally by 247/sports, but thanks in part to the transfers, and the talent of Ziaire Williams, Evan Mobley will not make the biggest impact as a freshman for a PAC-12 squad this season.  Needless to say, Coach Enfield will be looking to Mobley to not only replace the team-leading16 points per game of the departing Okongwu but his team-leading plus eight-rebound per game.

If Mobley does not outright match those numbers, he will be close enough that the fans in attendance at the Galen Center will not pine for Okongwu all season.  Due to Mobley being able to extend the defense beyond the arc, Coach Enfield might be best served to have Mobley set-up where Utomi did on the perimeter, while Chevez Goodwin plays the role of Rakocevic in setting the high screens and Anbonkpolo spelling Onkongwu on the block.

The addition of Goodwin will also benefit Mobley as he will be better equipped to guard forwards on the perimeter than to battle in the paint defensively all game. Despite not having a lot of opportunities to display his ability to create his own shot in high school, Mobley will be the benefactor of open shots when the defense overloads and of high ball screens from Goodwin to attack the paint.

Okongwu’s stats were similar to PAC-12’s Freshman of the Year, Zeke Nnaji’s 16.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. With no reason to limit Mobley’s minutes look for him to produce similar numbers.
