Big East Basketball breakout candidate – Romeo Weems (DePaul)

After a 12-1 start with wins over Iowa, Minnesota, and Texas Tech, the excitement was at an extreme high at DePaul, and then came Big East play and the Blue Demons saw the struggles they know all to well rear their ugly head again and they finished just 3-15. For DePaul to end seasons of despair, coach Dave Leitao is going to need someone on his roster to step up and a go-to-guy this season.

One guy who is a good breakout candidate for the Blue Demons next season is sophomore guard Romeo Weems. The 6-7 forward from Michigan came to DePaul with lots of fanfare as a top-100 recruit and he was thrust into the starting line up from day one starting all 32 games, he had a solid first year averaging eight points, five rebounds, and 1.7 assists. While the numbers were decent, he was a little inconsistent, he registered two double-doubles but he also put up an 0-5 effort in the team’s final game with two points in 36 minutes.

Weems needs to make the jump and become more consistent on a nightly basis. For most teams, a breakout player can be seen as a luxury, but for DePaul, Weems having a breakout season is closer to a necessity.
