WCC Basketball breakout candidate – Joey Calcaterra (San Diego)

San Diego finished near the bottom of the conference last season, winning just two games. The good news for the Toreros is, there was only one senior on last year’s roster, so there is hope that 2020-21 will be better for head coach Sam Scholl and his team. They return their top four scorers and one of those, junior guard Joey Calcaterra, could be a guy that makes another leap forward in his junior season.

In his first season, the 6-3 guard averaged just 2.8 points per game as a freshman in limited minutes, and then as a sophomore, he started all but one game last season. Despite winning just two conference games, a season sweep of Portland, he notched games of 15 points or more 11 times last season. He found the three-point shot to his liking last season, attempting 142 longballs, second-most on the team, and making a team-high 52.

He needs to improve on his offensive efficiency somewhat, as his three-point shooting percentage of 36.6% was nearly as high as his overall field goal percentage of 38%. If he can become a more efficient scorer for San Diego, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Calcaterra as the Toreros’ best player next season.
