Big Sky Basketball: Top 10 head coaches of the century (2000-20)
By Joey Loose
1. Big Sky Basketball coach rankings – Randy Rahe (Weber State, 2006-2020)
Since his arrival at the school in 2006, Rahe has made and kept Weber State as a top-level contender in the Big Sky on a consistent basis. He arrived following a number of assistant coaching jobs all over the west coast, including time at Colorado State, Utah State, and Utah. As he’s shown over these last fourteen years, he was clearly ready for a head coaching gig.
Rahe has won five Big Sky regular-season titles and has led Weber State to the NCAA Tournament three times during his tenure. When you throw in a whole host of other postseason appearances, he’s had the Wildcats playing meaningful basketball in March more times than not. His 2013 team won 30 games and made a deep CIT run, while his 2016 squad was the most recent to win the conference titles. His 278 career wins stand out in Weber State history.
Last season was a struggle, at just 12-20, but I’d expect Rahe to put things together moving forward for the Wildcats. We’ve seen how Montana seems regularly to be fighting for conference titles and Rahe has made sure Weber State is always in the conversation as well. There are plenty of solid programs in the Big Sky, but Rahe has consistently kept Weber State among the most solid.
We have completed our run through the ten best Big Sky coaches since the turn of the century. This mid-major conference produces talent for these western schools and it’ll be intriguing to see how these programs change and grow in the coming years, especially as a whole new batch of coaches pass through the league.
