Rhode Island Basketball newcomer – Malik Martin

Guard | 6-foot-6 | 210 lbs. | UNC Charlotte, Staten Island, NY

There will be a familiar name in Kingston, Malik Martin, the younger brother of URI great Hassan, is committing to the Rams after spending his first two seasons at UNC Charlotte. Coach Cox reached out to Martin as soon as he heard he was transferring out of Charlotte.

Martin was previously offered a scholarship to URI from former head coach Dan Hurley, prior to his sophomore season at Curtis Senior High School.

Last season, Martin was named to the Conference USA’s All-Defensive team. The 6-foot-6 guard averaged 9.0 points during his 2019-2020 campaign. In addition, he ranked 5th in steals in the Conference USA last season which made him a great candidate for the conference’s All-Defensive team. Martin’s play compliments senior guard Fatts Russell who was awarded to the Atlantic-10 All-Defensive team.

When asked about Malik’s play similar to his brother, Hassan said, “Honestly, I’d say the humbleness too. Malik isn’t arrogant, ignorant, or cocky. But he can play. I agree that we both take pride in our defense. Malik is more of a  perimeter player and definitely has some offense to him, which people will see when he suits up for Rhode Island.” Martin mentioned this in his interview with Chris DiSano and his brother.

Martin brings versatility, character, and the ability to defend multiple positions at the wing. He will have two years of eligibility remaining and it’s unclear whether he will have to sit a year before repping the Keaney Blue in the Ryan Center.
