NCAA Basketball: Analyzing top-100 PG Tyrese Hunter top 10 programs
Georgia Bulldogs
One of a few teams on this list without an obvious need for a point guard, Georgia is on the path to getting as much talent on the roster as possible. They’ve done that this offseason, landing a trio of grad transfers, including guards Justin Kier and Andrew Garcia. The Bulldogs are in play for a number of top-100 recruits in the 2021 class, with as many as five scholarships available.
The question, however, is where Hunter would fit in the current logjam of Bulldog point guards. Sophomore Sahvir Wheeler will be starting once again, joined by incoming JUCO guard Mikal Starks and four-star freshman point guard KJ Johnson. While it’s true that Hunter can play off-ball and that Georgia doesn’t have any true shooting guards on the 2021-22 roster, this would be a destination least likely for the recruit to find major minutes as a lead ball-handler, at least in the first couple of years.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
There’s going to a huge need for a point guard after next season, with All-ACC star Jose Alvarado set to graduate. And if Michael Devoe decides to go pro instead of stay for his senior campaign, that would leave just incoming USC transfer Kyle Sturdivant and incoming three-star combo guard Tristan Maxwell on the projected 2021 roster.
The Yellow Jackets have been hard after Hunter and is considered to be a real contender to land him. It makes sense since they can offer him immediate playing time and a large role in the offensive gameplan as a freshman. The team, without Devoe in particular, would be rebuilding a bit after next season. That tradeoff may be worth it if he wants to play big minutes as a freshman.
