Big Ten Basketball: Analyzing each program’s 2020 recruiting classes
Illinois Fighting Illini: No. 3 Big Ten, No. 16 Nation
Brandon Lieb 6’11 / 205 C:
Has to, and will be able to develop physically, the biggest debate is whether he has a soft touch in the paint or is just soft. Not as dominant as other centers his height coming out of high school, but plays like he is enjoying the game. He protects the rim more than he blocks shots and is n ot great at defending the perimeter. Coach Brad Underwood will be restricted to playing him in the post, even though his outside shooting game is improving.
Coleman Hawkins 6’10 / 195 PF:
Another frontcourt player who will need to fill out prior to reaching his full potential. As it stands, the three-star power forward will continue to extend the defense beyond the three-point arc. Even while playing at Prolific Prep, Hawkins was able to contribute, in no small part because of his open court dribbling capabilities and being able to recognize the open pass. Hawkins will challenge more shots than he blocks in the Big Ten, but due to being fundamentally sound, especially as he never misses a box out, he will be able to log at least double-digit minutes as a freshman.
Adam Miller 6’3 / 170 SG:
A constant threat to score whenever he touches the ball but does not have to in order to dictate the game. A great secondary ball-handler who does not possess an explosive first step, but uses his size to get to the paint and is able to make what looks like a difficult shot. In addition to Illinois the four star-guard who is also ranked 29 on RSCI visited; Arizona, Arizona State, and Louisville. All of whom noticed how he takes no defensive possessions off and is a very tough rebounder for his position.
Andre Curbelo 6’0 / 170 PG:
Ranked number 45 on RSCI the number one ranked player in New York is every bit a top 50 player. A true point guard in every sense of the word. Not only does he have great court vision to find the open man, but he is also able to penetrate the paint in order to draw help and get teammates open. The 15,544 fans that pack State Farm Center are going to be excited for this four-star point guard.
